Safari on Windows

Today at WWDC about the only thing that Apple really brought to the table was Safari for Windows XP and Vista.

My first thought is that this is a wonderful thing for web developers. They no longer need to rely on services such as browsershots to see what a page looks like in Safari. It really is great news for these people, but other than them who is going to use this browser?

Personally I do not like Safari. It reminds me of firefox that is using a beautiful theme but is lacking most of the core functionality. One of my favorite keyboard shortcuts is to open a new tab. In Firefox it is a simple control + t (comment + t on a Mac). Internet explorer follows this same pattern as well as Opera. Safari uses Control (command) + enter to open a new tab. I have no idea where they got this idea from, almost every browser I have used that has had tabs has used the same shortcut for opening a new tab.

Then item that originally forced me to not use Safari when I first got my Mac was not having auto complete domains being in the normal control (command) + enter. Whenever I type a domain I do not type the www. and the .com, I just hold down the control key and hit enter. On my Mac I had to start using the command key rather than control, easy enough to learn. The commands are still basically the same for Firefox on any computer. Safari uses its screwed up keyboard shortcuts and I can’t function without these.

I suggest everyone try Safari for Windows, just do not hold your breath that this is going to solve all of your browser woes.
