More Site Updates

After a year of using Serendipity it is time to go with something else. I’ve converted the site to Wordpress and created a WP theme out of my old s9y template. For the most part you should not notice too much different. Since I did start from near scratch with this theme it should be fairly lightweight. I might be missing some WP specific styles, but I’ve got it looking fairly good.

Links to posts are going to change quite a bit from the old version. At the moment I’ve not taken the time to use lighttpd rewrites as of the moment. I would suggest not bookmarking anything for the next few days as they will likely break.

For RSS subscribers nothing should change. I’ve been running feedburer for a long time and it should continue to work. You might want to verify that your feed is pointing to http://feeds.zacgarrett.com/tech-geek.

If you notice any massive problems please feel free to contact me.

I liked the original black template.

The problem with that theme is that it was painful to read. As much as I like dark themes they can be difficult to read. The bigger the screen and resolution the harder it is to read the dark themes.

That might be the issue. I normally visit the site when I’m at school. The gay ass school computers only have 600X800 resolution.

Why did you switch from Serendipity to WordPress?

I switched for various reasons. The first is what I consider boredom. I grew bored with s9y the development seemed to stagnate as the main developer, Garvin, was writing a book on the product.

I’ve been trying to get functionality in some plugins for s9y for a long time they already exist in WP. Sometimes it felt like pulling teeth to get a new plugin. I was almost going to offer money to get a plugin created.

I looked at my options and it was easier for me just to switch to a platform that I know already supports what I am looking for.

The point that drived home the fact for me was that Automattic made $29.9mil in series b financing. With that kind of backing it was time for me to take another look at it. They fixed all of the issues I had in the past and made it even easier to use.
