It has been nearly a month since my first encounter with Media Temple and it is time to look back at their service. Can this hosting actually be good enough to look over the initial reaction?
This hosting provider started out with a kick in the groin. By not providing a sales rep on a Sunday and letting me sit on hold for nearly half an hour they nearly lost my business. Surprisingly they actually cared enough about my business to give me a phone call and apologize for my inconvenience and offered a free month of hosting. Seeing that I still needed to find a new host I took them up on the offer.
To see if they actually cared enough about the issue to make sure it does not happen again I decided to give them a call on Sunday again. As soon as I hit the sales button there was a message stating that all reps are either busy or it is during their off hours. Then it transferred me into a voicemail box. Problem resolved in my opinion.
Now for the important factors, how does the hosting stack up against some of my other hosting providers? Amazingly well. Compared to most of my other VPS providers this is the first account that I have not seen a load on the server when my account is inactive. Even on the best host prior to this one I would occasionally see some activity on the server when my VPS is inactive. I am actually surprised how great the server is, which in itself says a ton. I’ve yet to have a single bit of downtime that was not self inflicted.
The server is able to handle the load of my site with ease. This also has to do with the fact that I am not trying to run Apache, which is quite bloated. With lighttpd and postgresql I’ve been able to withstand a ton of traffic without having a load over 0.5. I am simply amazed by the power of this server. I can tell that the server is not oversold, which is almost always the case with hosting providers today.
I will happily pay the $50 per month for a Media Temple VPS. The hosting is some of the best I have had ever. They know how to keep the servers running in tip top shape. I was not expecting much after the original faux pas, but I am a happy customer. I recommend their hosting to anyone who needs top quality hosting.
